My local fish-wrapper has a section where readers can ask questions of any kind. This one came up this week:
Q: What is the best practical joke ever played?
A: The best, and simplest, practical joke was played many
years ago during Oxford's Rag Week, when jokers told
a group of workmen who were digging up a road that
some undergraduates masquerading as policemen were
about to arrest them as a rag stunt.
The jokers then told a group of policemen that undergraduates
masquerading as workmen were digging up the road as
a rag stunt.
The answer was submitted by a Mr John McKay of Oxford, whom I thank sincerely.
I was wondering, do they have rag weeks at American colleges like Harvard, etc.? Not that I'm suggesting anything ...
