Some new neighbors had moved in across the street and one house over. My wife and I had "played hooky" from our jobs one gorgeous Northern California spring day and gone on a picnic to a nearby park. Upon returning to the house, we were unloading the car when we sensed we were Not Alone.

A very cute little dog (breed unknown by myself or my wife; we're cat people,) was sniffing and wagging his tail and generally letting us know that he wanted to be friendly.

Our new neighbor came running across the street to apologize for the dog bothering us, and my wife assured her that there was no problem. Being a friendly person, my wife asked, "So what's his name?"

Our neighbor replied "Plato."

My wife smiled and immediately started a discussion about philisophy, great thinkers and literature, wondering what other famous names would make good names for dogs.

Our neighbor stared blankly at my wife for about two minutes, and then said, "I meant that clay stuff for little kids..."
